Sustainable Healthy ERMN (SHE)

A strong border region also needs healthy citizens. This project thus aims to establish a structural network of cooperation among public health services in the Euroregion Rhine-Meuse-north (ERMN) so that knowledge on public health can be exchanged and enhanced.

Project framework

Target group: ERMN citizens, participating public health institutes and their network partners
Period: 1 July 2020 – 31 December 2022

Background of the Project

The Province of Limburg has taken the initiative to ask euPrevent to draw up an implementation plan with spearheads for 2018-2020. After many discussions with stakeholders from Limburg and Germany, including the ERMN, the Province of Limburg has decided to temporarily appoint euPrevent as a euregional knowledge broker and ask them to set up a structural euregional network in the field of public health in the ERMN’s work area. Since this was in line with the wishes of the public health care organisations, this Interreg project came about.

Focus of the Project

The focus of the project is to gain knowledge on the health structure of public health systems in the ERMN and to share this knowledge cross-borderly, so that the capacity can be built to collaborate on cross-border issues related to public health.

Activities

Workshops will be organized at participating public health institutes from both Dutch and German sides in order to gain more knowledge on how the reciprocal system works and to gain more knowledge about how they work with regard to

  • Communicable diseases (e.g. COVID, flu, measles, infections);
  • Healthy youth: This includes themes such as ‘Generation smoke free’, and alcohol consumption;
  • Target groups that are difficult to reach;
  • Migrants.

Training courses and internships will be organized in order to share the knowledge and make it broadened.

A citizen summit will be organized to hear the experience and opinions of the citizens in the field of public health.

At the end of the project, a report will be made on how a structural network should and could look like in the ERMN and what needs to be done to achieve this.

Results

The first steps will be taken to create a cross-border public health network in the ERMN. This will help us identify the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as promoted by the UN and the WHO so that health becomes an integral part of Euroregional cooperation.
